Since the end of the Cold War, many disarmament groups have struggled to maintain the funding needed to continue work on disarmament and arms control issues. Yet there remain thousands of nuclear weapons on high alert, and hundreds of thousands of small arms obtained through illicit trade are being used to fuel dozens of armed conflicts around the world. Although work on many disarmament issues has been stalled for a number of years, there have been recent victories, including the promulgation of a Cluster Munitions Treaty and work toward an Arms Trade Treaty. Nuclear weapons, weapons in space and the role of women in peace and security processes are all receiving reinvigorated attention. Prominent politicians and activists from the right and left of the political spectrum, including George Shultz, William Perry, Henry Kissinger and Sam Nunn, are coming together to make their voices heard. There has never been a better time to give to disarmament organizations.
